PoE stands for Power over Ethernet, a networking abbreviation.
Delivers electrical power and data over the same Ethernet cable, so access points, IP phones and security cameras need no separate power adapter. Power comes from a PoE-capable switch or a small injector, following IEEE 802.3 standards.
Example: The camera needs 802.3at PoE, but the old switch only supplies 15 watts per port.
Usage notes
IEEE 802.3af (2003) provides up to 15.4 watts at the source, 802.3at or PoE+ (2009) up to 30 watts, and 802.3bt (2018) up to 60 or 90 watts. Some vendors sell "passive PoE" with fixed voltages and no negotiation, which can damage incompatible devices. Usually written with a lowercase o.
