1. Primary myelofibrosis

Medical · Hematology and Oncology Abbreviations

Myeloproliferative neoplasm in which bone marrow is progressively replaced by scar tissue, forcing blood production into the spleen and liver. It causes anemia, a massively enlarged spleen, fatigue, night sweats, weight loss and bone pain.

Example: Massive splenomegaly, teardrop cells, leukoerythroblastic smear and grade 3 marrow fibrosis: PMF.

JAK inhibitors, starting with ruxolitinib in 2011 and followed by fedratinib, pacritinib and momelotinib, shrink the spleen and relieve symptoms but do not cure the disease. Allogeneic stem cell transplant is the only potentially curative treatment. Myelofibrosis can also develop after polycythemia vera or essential thrombocythemia, called post-PV or post-ET myelofibrosis.

2. Probability mass function

Units & Measurements · Statistics Abbreviations

For a discrete random variable, the function giving the probability of each possible value, such as P(X = 3) for the number of heads in five flips. PMF values lie between 0 and 1 and sum to 1.

Example: The binomial PMF gives P(X = 3) = 0.3125 for five fair coin flips.

Named discrete distributions with standard PMFs include the Bernoulli, binomial, Poisson and geometric. Excel's BINOM.DIST with the cumulative argument FALSE returns PMF values. The continuous counterpart is the probability density function.

3. Product-market fit

Business & Finance · Management & Strategy Abbreviations

Point at which a product satisfies strong market demand, shown by customers buying, using and recommending it without heavy persuasion. Founders and venture investors treat reaching PMF as the main milestone before scaling sales and marketing.

Example: We had PMF in hospitals but not in clinics, so we stopped spending on the clinic channel.

Marc Andreessen popularized the phrase in a 2007 blog post, defining it as "being in a good market with a product that can satisfy that market." A commonly cited test from growth marketer Sean Ellis asks users how they would feel if they could no longer use the product; 40 percent or more answering "very disappointed" is taken as a sign of fit.
