pinx. stands for Pinxit (painted it), a Latin abbreviation.
Credits the painter of the original picture on which an engraving or printed reproduction is based. It also occurs beside signatures on paintings themselves.
Example: The mezzotint is lettered "J. Reynolds pinx." at left and the engraver's name followed by "sc." at right.
Usage notes
Variants include pinxt. and the full pinxit. Before photography, reproductive engraving was the main way famous paintings reached a wide public, so the pinx. credit told buyers whose composition they were seeing. Catalogers transcribe such lettering exactly, because changes to it help distinguish different states and editions of a print.
