PGY stands for Postgraduate year, a hospital abbreviation.
Level of training for a resident physician after medical school; PGY-1 is the first year (internship), and higher numbers indicate seniority through residency and fellowship.
Example: PGY-2 resident on night float; attending available by phone.
Usage notes
Total training length varies by specialty, from three years in internal medicine to five or more in surgery. In US hospitals the July changeover, when new interns start, is sometimes called the "July effect". In the UK, junior doctors use foundation year (FY1, FY2) labels instead.
