CategoriesMedical

PCom stands for Posterior communicating artery, a neurology abbreviation.

Vessel linking the internal carotid artery with the posterior cerebral artery on each side of the circle of Willis. Aneurysms at its junction with the carotid are among the most common intracranial aneurysms.

Example: New painful left third nerve palsy with a dilated pupil: urgent CTA for PCom aneurysm.

Usage notes

Because the oculomotor nerve runs beside it, an expanding PCom aneurysm classically causes a third nerve palsy with a drooping eyelid, an eye turned down and out, and a dilated pupil, a neurosurgical emergency. Also written PComm or PCoA. In some people the posterior cerebral artery fills mainly from the PCom, a variant called fetal PCA.
