PAINAD stands for Pain Assessment in Advanced Dementia, a patient assessment abbreviation.
Observational scale for people with advanced dementia, rating breathing, negative vocalization, facial expression, body language and consolability from 0 to 2 each, for a total of 0 to 10.
Example: PAINAD 6 during morning care; scheduled acetaminophen started.
Usage notes
Published in 2003 by Victoria Warden and colleagues. Behaviors such as grimacing, moaning or resisting care are often the only sign of pain in late-stage dementia. A change from the resident's usual baseline is as important as the absolute score.
