CategoriesWriting & Everyday

OOF stands for Out of facility, an email and office abbreviation.

Microsoft's in-house term for an automatic out-of-office reply, still visible in Exchange settings and developer documentation. Outside Microsoft-centered workplaces, OOO is far more common.

Example: Exchange administrators can check the user's OOF settings to see why automatic replies are still going out.

Usage notes

"Out of Facility" is the traditional expansion, though Microsoft's own retelling of the history notes there is little firm evidence the phrase was ever used and the F may simply have been preferred. The label survived into Exchange Web Services, which has operations such as GetUserOofSettings, even though Outlook now shows "Automatic Replies." Some employees still say "I'm OOF" in speech.
