OMG stands for Oh my God, a texting and chat abbreviation.

Expresses surprise, excitement, shock or dismay, from "omg I passed!" to "omg no." One of the most widely recognized abbreviations in English, used in speech as well as writing.

Usage notes

First recorded in a 1917 letter from British admiral Lord Fisher to Winston Churchill, and added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2011. Often read aloud as letters ("oh-em-gee"). Some readers find the religious exclamation offensive, so "omg" may be expanded as "oh my gosh" or "oh my goodness." Avoid in formal writing.
