NPP stands for Net primary production, a biology abbreviation.
Rate at which plants and other photosynthesizers store energy as new biomass after subtracting what they use for their own respiration. NPP sets the energy budget available to all other organisms in an ecosystem and is measured in grams of carbon per square meter per year.
Example: Tropical rainforests have among the highest NPP of any land ecosystem.
Usage notes
Gross primary production (GPP) is total photosynthesis; NPP equals GPP minus plant respiration. Global terrestrial and ocean NPP are each roughly 50 billion tonnes of carbon per year. Satellites estimate NPP from measurements of vegetation greenness and ocean chlorophyll.
