NORA stands for Non-operating room anesthesia, an anesthesia abbreviation.
Anesthesia care delivered outside the traditional operating room, such as in endoscopy suites, cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs, interventional radiology, MRI and radiation oncology. It is one of the fastest-growing areas of anesthesia practice.
Example: NORA case in MRI: pediatric sedation with MR-conditional monitors.
Usage notes
Remote locations bring challenges such as cramped space, unfamiliar staff, distance from help and, in MRI, magnet safety. ASA monitoring and equipment standards apply equally outside the OR. Also called out-of-OR anesthesia.
