NFP stands for Nonfarm payrolls, an economics abbreviation.
Monthly estimate of the change in the number of paid US jobs, excluding farm workers, private household employees and the self-employed, published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in its Employment Situation report, usually on the first Friday of the month. It is one of the most market-moving economic releases.
Example: NFP rose by 180,000 in March, ahead of the 150,000 economists had expected.
Usage notes
The figure comes from a survey of roughly 120,000 businesses and government agencies, while the unemployment rate comes from a separate household survey. Initial estimates are revised in the next two monthly reports and benchmarked annually. In charity usage, NFP means not-for-profit.
