NAV stands for Net asset value, a stock market & investing abbreviation.
Value per share of a fund, calculated as total assets minus liabilities, divided by the number of shares outstanding. Mutual funds price purchases and redemptions at the NAV calculated after the market closes each business day.
Example: The fund's NAV fell to $24.18 after the sell-off in technology stocks.
Usage notes
ETF and closed-end fund shares trade at market prices that can sit above (a premium) or below (a discount) their NAV. Money market funds aim to keep a stable NAV of $1.00, and "breaking the buck" signals trouble, as when the Reserve Primary Fund fell below $1 in 2008. In private equity, NAV refers to the value of a fund's remaining holdings.
