MUA stands for Manipulation under anesthesia, a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.

Procedure in which a joint is moved forcefully through its range of motion while the patient is anesthetized, to break up scar tissue. It is commonly used for stiffness after knee replacement and for frozen shoulder.

Example: TKA flexion stuck at 75 degrees at 6 weeks; MUA scheduled followed by daily PT.

Usage notes

Knee manipulation after arthroplasty works best within about the first three months. Risks include fracture and wound problems. In other contexts MUA can mean a market or utility abbreviation, but in orthopedics it nearly always means this procedure.
