MSUD stands for Maple syrup urine disease, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.
Inherited disorder in which the body cannot break down the branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine, leading to toxic buildup, poor feeding, lethargy and seizures within days of birth. Urine and earwax may smell sweet like maple syrup.
Example: Newborn screen positive for MSUD, leucine elevated; urgent transfer to metabolic center.
Usage notes
MSUD is included in US newborn screening. It is especially common among Old Order Mennonites in Pennsylvania because of a founder mutation. Lifelong dietary restriction prevents crises, and liver transplantation can effectively cure it. Illness can trigger dangerous metabolic decompensation.
