ITIN stands for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, a tax abbreviation.

Nine-digit tax processing number the IRS issues to people who must file or be listed on a US tax return but are not eligible for a Social Security number, such as some immigrants, foreign investors and their dependents. ITINs always begin with the digit 9.

Example: He pays taxes every year using an ITIN, even though he can't get a Social Security number.

Usage notes

Introduced in 1996. An ITIN does not authorize work, provide Social Security benefits or qualify the holder for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Numbers not used on a federal return for three consecutive years expire and must be renewed. Applications are made on Form W-7.
