ITER stands for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, a physics abbreviation.

Giant fusion experiment under construction at Saint-Paul-lès-Durance in southern France, funded by the European Union, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States. Its tokamak is designed to produce 500 megawatts of fusion power from 50 megawatts of heating, a tenfold gain.

Example: After repeated delays, ITER is now expected to begin research operations in the 2030s.

Usage notes

The project was agreed in 2006 after decades of planning; the original acronym is now played down, and ITER is said to mean "the way" in Latin. Its superconducting magnets and vacuum vessel are among the largest of their kind. ITER will not generate electricity; a later demonstration plant, DEMO, is meant to do that.
