ISRO stands for Indian Space Research Organisation, an astronomy & Space abbreviation.
India's national space agency, founded in 1969 and headquartered in Bengaluru. ISRO builds and launches satellites with its own PSLV and GSLV rockets and has achieved low-cost lunar and Mars missions, including the first soft landing near the Moon's south polar region in 2023.
Example: ISRO's Chandrayaan-3 lander touched down on August 23, 2023, now celebrated as India's National Space Day.
Usage notes
Physicist Vikram Sarabhai founded ISRO, and the Chandrayaan-3 lander is named Vikram in his honor. The Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) reached Mars orbit in 2014 on its first attempt, at a cost lower than some Hollywood space films. A PSLV launched a record 104 satellites on one flight in 2017.
