IMb stands for Intelligent Mail barcode, a mail and postal abbreviation.
Names the USPS barcode of tall and short bars printed on letters and flats, encoding the ZIP+4 code, delivery point and mailer information for automated sorting and tracking.
Example: Bulk mailers must print a valid IMb on each piece to qualify for automation prices.
Usage notes
The IMb replaced the older POSTNET barcode, which stopped qualifying for automation discounts in 2013. It uses 65 bars to encode up to 31 digits. Mailers can follow IMb scans to see when pieces move through the mail stream.
