GOLD stands for Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease, a respiratory abbreviation.
International collaboration that publishes the annually updated Global Strategy for the diagnosis, management and prevention of COPD. Its spirometric grades (GOLD 1 to 4) and treatment groups are used by clinicians worldwide.
Example: GOLD 2025 report recommends LAMA/LABA as initial therapy for most symptomatic patients.
Usage notes
Launched in 1997 with the US National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the World Health Organization. GOLD simplified its assessment groups to A, B and E (for exacerbations) in 2023. Clinicians write "GOLD 3" for spirometric severity and "GOLD E" for an exacerbation-prone group. GOLD also sponsors World COPD Day each November.
