GGF stands for Great-grandfather, a genealogy abbreviation.

Abbreviates great-grandfather in genealogy notes, forums and family trees, with related forms such as GGM (great-grandmother) and 2xGGF (great-great-grandfather).

Example: My GGF emigrated from Bergen in 1882 and homesteaded in North Dakota.

Usage notes

Repeated "greats" are compressed with numbers, so 3xGGF means great-great-great-grandfather. Genealogists also write GF and GM for grandparents. Because the number of ancestors doubles each generation, a person has eight great-grandparents and sixteen great-great-grandparents.
