GBH stands for Grievous bodily harm, a police abbreviation.
Serious assault offense in England and Wales involving really serious injury or wounding, charged under section 20 (maximum five years) or, if intent is proved, section 18 (maximum life imprisonment) of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861.
Example: The attacker was convicted of GBH with intent and jailed for nine years.
Usage notes
"Grievous" has been interpreted by courts to mean "really serious." Section 18 is sometimes described as the most serious non-fatal offense against the person. Scotland uses "serious assault" instead. The term is familiar from British crime dramas and news.
