Usage notes
It began in 1975 as a meeting of six countries at Rambouillet, France, with Canada joining in 1976. It became the G8 when Russia joined in 1997 and reverted to the G7 after Russia was suspended in 2014. The G7 has no charter or secretariat, and its statements are political commitments rather than binding agreements.
