FTIR stands for Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, a chemistry abbreviation.

The standard modern form of infrared spectroscopy, in which an interferometer collects all wavelengths at once and a Fourier transform converts the signal into a spectrum. Faster and more sensitive than older dispersive instruments, FTIR identifies plastics, coatings, drugs, gemstones and contaminants.

Example: FTIR analysis identified the white residue on the filter as a polyamide fiber.

Usage notes

The core component, the Michelson interferometer, dates to the 1880s, but FTIR instruments became common only in the 1970s, once minicomputers could perform the Fourier transform quickly. Also written FT-IR. Handheld units let customs officers and first responders identify unknown powders and liquids in the field.
