FAF stands for Final approach fix, an aviation abbreviation.
Fix from which the final segment of a nonprecision instrument approach begins, marked on US approach charts with a Maltese cross. On a precision approach the equivalent point is where the aircraft intercepts the glideslope at the published altitude, shown by a lightning-bolt symbol.
Example: Report the FAF inbound, and expect landing clearance behind the regional jet on a two-mile final.
Usage notes
Crossing the FAF typically triggers the final checklist, the start of the timer on timed approaches and a radio call to the tower. Approach charts also show an IAF (initial approach fix) and IF (intermediate fix) leading to it. Airline stabilized-approach policies generally require landing configuration by 1,000 feet above the runway in instrument conditions.
