DNAR stands for Do not attempt resuscitation, an emergency medicine abbreviation.
Variant of the DNR order emphasizing that resuscitation is an attempt that may not succeed. It is used by some hospitals, professional organizations and countries in place of DNR.
Example: DNAR order signed by attending; patient and wife agree.
Usage notes
The wording was promoted to make clear that CPR often fails, especially in frail or seriously ill patients. Clinically it means the same as DNR. Policies may also use "no code" informally, a phrase many ethicists discourage.
