CVICU stands for Cardiovascular intensive care unit, a hospital abbreviation.

Intensive care unit for patients after heart and major vascular surgery, such as bypass grafting, valve replacement and aortic repair, and for those on mechanical circulatory support. Nurses manage chest tubes, pacing wires and vasoactive drips.

Example: POD 0 CABG x3 to CVICU, extubated at 4 hours, chest tubes to suction.

Usage notes

Some hospitals call it CTICU (cardiothoracic ICU) or CSICU (cardiac surgery ICU). Patients may arrive on ECMO, an intra-aortic balloon pump or a ventricular assist device. Fast-track protocols aim to remove the breathing tube within hours of surgery.
