Usage notes
Pronounced "KYOO-nee". City College, the oldest component, offered free tuition from 1847 until the 1976 fiscal crisis. CUNY's open admissions policy of 1970 greatly expanded access for working-class New Yorkers. It is separate from SUNY, the statewide system.
