CSS Profile stands for College Scholarship Service Profile, an academic abbreviation.

Online financial aid application run by the College Board and required by about 200 colleges, mostly private, plus some scholarship programs, to award their own institutional grants. It asks far more detailed questions than the FAFSA, including home equity and, at many schools, the noncustodial parent's finances.

Example: Princeton requires the CSS Profile in addition to the FAFSA for all aid applicants.

Usage notes

The fee is $25 for the first school and $16 for each additional one, waived automatically for many families with incomes up to $100,000. Colleges apply their own formulas, so aid offers from different schools can differ widely. The "College Scholarship Service" name dates to the 1950s.
