BoJ stands for Bank of Japan, an economics abbreviation.
Central bank of Japan, founded in 1882 and based in Tokyo, which sets monetary policy, issues yen banknotes and acts as banker to the government. It pioneered zero interest rates, quantitative easing and yield curve control.
Example: The BoJ raised its short-term policy rate and signaled further hikes if wage growth held up.
Usage notes
After decades of deflation and ultra-low rates, the BoJ ended negative rates and yield curve control in March 2024. Its large purchases of government bonds and exchange-traded funds made it a major owner of Japanese assets. Kazuo Ueda became governor in 2023.
