AAR stands for After action review, a military term abbreviation.
Structured discussion held after training or an operation in which participants examine what was supposed to happen, what actually happened, why, and how to improve. The Army developed the method in the 1970s.
Example: During the AAR, the platoon admitted it had lost track of the second squad in the dark.
Usage notes
A formal written after-action report, also abbreviated AAR, documents lessons for higher headquarters. The review format is now widely used in business, hospitals and emergency management. Good AARs focus on learning rather than blame.
